I recently had a conversation with a machine shop owner who told me that he didn’t need to monitor throughput because “the shop is running at capacity.” When I pressed him about potentially adding more capacity, he immediately explained that almost every year he buys a new machine to increase capacity. |

He commented “I told you. The shop is at capacity.” This is when I realized that “capacity” means different things to different people.

What Does Manufacturing Capacity Really Mean?
Capacity is defined as the maximum amount an object or space can hold, or an individual's (or operation’s) ability to do something. So how could it mean different things?
In the non-manufacturing world, this is a simple concept: today, I have the capacity to run a mile. If you paid me a million dollars and let me plan and train, do I have the capacity to run 5 miles? You bet. Heck, pay me enough and I may even have the capacity to run a marathon.
In manufacturing, this concept often gets lost. Capacity in manufacturing does not mean that there isn’t more capacity tomorrow (or even today). Actual Capacity -the output actually achieved--reflects the current system. It includes both planned and unplanned losses, including machine breakdowns, scrap, rework, and yield losses as well as operator performance variation.
Aim To Get to Effective Capacity by Thinking About Design Capacity
Your manufacturing reality today doesn't have to be your manufacturing output. Think about your design capacity: the maximum theoretical output of the machines or process, assuming ideal conditions, no breakdowns, and always available and on-point operators and materials.
Somewhere between your ideal, designed state and your actual capacity is a more efficient state: an effective capacity.
Once you conceptualize the gap between reality and an improved state, you can begin talking actions to improve your capacity.

How to use OEE to Start Measuring and Monitoring to Understand Actual Versus Effective

OEE is used to measure how well manufacturing equipment is utilized compared to its full potential, during periods when it is scheduled to run.
