Optimize Your Sustainability with Discrete Event Simulation for ESG

Written by Joshua Zable | Apr 1, 2025 11:30:00 AM

As more and more organizations are looking to kick-start sustainability efforts or a formal Environmental Social Governance (ESG) program, we find ourselves in conversations with customers looking for ways we can help them achieve their goals.  In the past we have provided multiple ways Minitab can help

As part of our commitment to help our customer continuously improve, we want to highlight 3 innovative ways in which customers can potentially use of our newer solutions, Discrete Event Simulation, to help further their sustainability program.

What is Discrete Event Simulation?

Discrete Event Simulation (DES) is a method used to model the operation of a system as a sequence of discrete events. In Short, DES enables you to simulate “what-if” scenarios to optimize outcomes.  In this case, using DES to optimize more sustainable outcomes can help add more breadth and depth to your ESG program.

How DES Can Help Your ESG Efforts

Environmental: Use Discrete Events Simulation to Help Conserve Energy

One of the easiest ways to help minimize energy consumption is by simply consuming less energy! This could mean anything from dimming the lights to limiting production from multiple machines into one machine – as long as you get the desired quality and quantity of output.

So how do you know shutting something down won’t be a bad decision? Enter discrete event simulation.  You can either design an experiment to change your process or simply simulate the scenario of shutting down a piece of equipment and measure the outcome.

Environmental: Use Discrete Events Simulation to Help Lower Carbon Emissions

Naturally, one way of lowering carbon emissions is to reduce your energy consumption.  However, that’s not the only way.  By evaluating the carbon footprint of various scenarios, you can select the ones that offer the greatest reduction in emissions.  There are a number of ways to do this through both manufacturing as well as supply chain improvements which is why Simul8 even has a specific Carbon Emissions feature to help you tackle all of these challenges.

Social: Use Discrete Events Simulation to Help Improve Workplace Safety

Often, once you find the root cause of workplace safety, you may be able to implement and measure an improvement.  However, when implementing a change is complicated or costly, DES can simulate the scenarios to measure the outcomes – without having to make the change.

Governance: Use Discrete Events Simulation to Help Measure Regulatory Impacts

Part of having strong governance is abiding by the appropriate regulations.  As laws and requirements change, DES can help simulate different ways of abiding by these rules to mitigate any adverse impacts from them.  It can also help you simulate the changes you plan to make to ensure you’ll be in compliance with the new regulations.

Integrating Discrete Event Simulation into your sustainability program helps you make more informed decisions that align with your ESG goals. By optimizing processes, improving safety, and reducing environmental impacts, DES can be the tool your organization needs to achieve its sustainability targets.
