'현재 상태'의 가치 흐름 맵을 생성하면 낭비를 식별하는 데 도움이 되고 향후 개선된 공정 상태를 보다 쉽게 구상할 수 있습니다. 가치 흐름 매핑을 사용하면 어떤 공정도 개선할 수 있습니다. 하지만 도구를 제대로 활용하지 못하면 가치 흐름 맵이 품질과 효율을 개선할 수 있는 기회를 포착하지 못할 수도 있습니다. 가치 흐름 매핑에 투입되는 에너지를 최대한 활용하기 위한 5가지 가이드라인을 소개합니다.   1. **가치** **흐름** **맵** **공정을** **고객** **요구사항을** **기반으로** **합니다.** 고객 가치가 무엇인지 이해하고 이를 시작점으로 *사용해야* 합니다. 만약 그렇지 않으면 밴드 'The Fall'의 말처럼 '잘못된 디테일에 가장 큰 관심을 기울이는' 위험을 감수해야 합니다.  2. **작동되어야** **하는** **방식이** **아닌현재** **작동** **중인** **공정을** **파악합니다.** 직원이 20명일 때 잘 작동했던 공정은 직원이 200명으로 늘어나면 효율적이지 못할 수 있습니다. 공정을 현재 일어나고 있는 방식에 따라 매핑하세요. 기존에 통했던 방식이나 자신이 원하는 방식으로 매핑하는 것이 아닙니다. 3. **매핑** **활동을** **이끌** **가치** **흐름** **맵** **관리자를** **지정합니다.** 팀원과 이해관계자의 노력도 중요하지만 전체 가치 흐름 맵을 그릴 팀원 한 명을 임명(또는 선출)해야 합니다. 이를 통해 관리자는 자료 및 정보의 흐름을 파악할 수 있습니다. 4. **공정을** **검토하며** **자료와** **정보의** **흐름이** **정확한지** **확인합니다.** 가치 흐름 맵이 공정의 현실을 반영하는지 확인합니다. 공정의 전 과정을 처음부터 끝까지 살피다 보면 놓쳤을 수 있는 중요한 세부 사항이 드러날 수 있습니다. 5. **한** **번에** **한** **단계씩** **집중합니다. **각 단계를 정확하게 파악하고 있는지 확인합니다. 예를 들면 주기 시간을 재기 위해 벽에 걸린 시계를 믿지 말고 스톱워치를 사용하는 것입니다. 공정의 현재 상태에 대한 가치 흐름 맵을 만들면 과잉 재고, 비부가가치 시간, 다중 작업자와 같은 낭비되는 사항에 집중할 수 있습니다. 공정의 미래 상태를 구상할 때는 현재 상태의 가치 흐름 맵에서 데이터를 달리하여 가능한 개선 효과를 살펴볼 수 있습니다. 종이 위에서 가치 흐름 매핑을 수행할 수도 있지만 Minitab Engage와 같은 소프트웨어 도구를 사용하면 가치 흐름 매핑이 훨씬 쉬워집니다.
